Baudelaire n'avait pas traduit tous les contes d'Edgar Poe. Ces textes " négligés " ont été ici réunis, dans l'ordre chronologique de leur publication. Ces nouvelles, quasiment inconnues du public français, relèvent non seulement du fantastique, mais encore de ce que Poe appelait le " grotesque ", et aussi de la parodie et de l'autoparodie. Dans sa préface, Alain Jaubert fait le point sur toute une imagerie romantico-psychanalytique qui a travesti l'œuvre d'un des plus grands écrivains américains et donne diverses clés pour de nouvelles lectures de Poe.
