Ladydi, quatorze ans, est née dans un monde où il ne fait pas bon être une fille. Dans les montagnes du Guerrero au Mexique, les femmes doivent apprendre à se débrouiller seules, car les hommes ont les uns après les autres quitté cette région pour une vie meilleure. Les barons de la drogue y règnent sans partage. Les mères déguisent leurs filles en garçons ou les enlaidissent pour leur éviter de tomber dans les griffes des cartels qui les « volent ».
Et lorsque les 4X4 patrouillent dans les villages, Ladydi et ses amies se cachent dans des trous creusés dans les arrière-cours, pareilles à des animaux qui détalent pour se mettre en sécurité. Alors que la mère de Ladydi attend en vain le retour de son mari, la jeune fille et ses amies rêvent à un avenir plein de promesses, qui ne serait pas uniquement affaire de survie.
