Sur une île du Sud de la Suède au Xe siècle, un homme vit seul à la ferme avec ses deux fils. Le chemin de ceux-ci est tout tracé : naviguer au loin, pour guerroyer au-delà des mers à l'Ouest ou pour faire commerce sur les voies fluviales de l'Est. De l'autre côté de la Baltique, à Kiev, vivent un marchand de soie et sa famille. Radoslav rêve de devenir soldat, sa soeur Milka est une jeune fille raffinée qui joue avec ses deux esclaves : Petite Marmite à la peau sombre et Poisson d'Or aux yeux bridés. Quand la belle ville d'Orient tombe aux mains des pillards, Milka et Radoslav trouvent refuge auprès de rustres navigateurs venus du Nord. Dès lors le destin des deux familles est à jamais mêlé.
