Dans un monde futur partagé entre nuit et lumière, chacun est susceptible de porter dans son ombre un « ilys », sorte d’esprit bon ou mauvais qui peut influencer les actions que l’on commet. On a conscience ou pas de son ilys, ce qui rend la personne soit active, soit passive voire contrôlée. Tomas est lui en parfaite symbiose avec son ilys de la race bienfaisante des Almars. Cette harmonie lui permet d’être particulièrement efficace dans la lutte à mener contre les mauvais ilys, les Rogons, prompts à s’emparer de toutes les enveloppes charnelles disponibles.
Et puis il y a la belle Lylas dont Tomas est amoureux, et qui appartient au peuple des Noctamm : parce qu’elle vient du noir, parce qu’elle n’a pas d’ombre, elle interpelle et a été kidnappée par le clan des Rogons. Avec un petit groupe de compagnons, Tomas va aller enquêter jusqu’à la forteresse Rogon et si possible délivrer Lylasà
