Fin des années 40, Robert Sherman, candidat démocrate à la présidence, est assassiné en plein discours de campagne. Son père, Jay Sherman, véritable incarnation du rêve américain, parti de rien et devenu à présent un magnat de la finance, assiste, impuissant, à la scène. Alors que son fils est entre la vie et la mort, Jay reçoit un étrange appel : il doit payer POUR CE QU'IL A FAIT ! Après son fils, ce sera le tour de sa fille, Jeannie, et aussi de sa fortune. Il va tout perdre ! Le FBI, adversaire historique de la pègre, va mener l'enquête et assurer la protection de Jay.
